The question that Korean geographer should meet many times is "why you chose the discipline?". That is not an easy question. However, we geographers are prepared to answer the question because we are too often questioned. One of my prepared answer is "dependent on the cut-line of entrance examination". It is, of course, not true, but rather convenient because people are not supposed to ask more when I answered like that.
In general, Korean are clearly aware of how important cut-line is in the entrance exam. I believe that the question is another version of the other question;
what the hell are you geographers do?
In fact, I do not know. Even though I can be classified as a geographer, my job is rather irrelevant to geography. In fact, there are few jobs that are clearly separated from geography as most of the tasks human-beings do is done on the geography.
In some aspects, all of the human activities are relevant to geography; even the history of mathematics is closely related to geography. Think of who was the first person to measure the circumference of the earth, Eratosthenes, who is also clarified as a geographer.

Maybe people who are asking about geography want to know what the original role of geographers is in this society. For example, people are usually aware of the role of historian, which investigate the fact and context of the historical events and provide us lessons from it. It is really clear; but how about geography? If you as a geographers gather the geographical information on different places, what are those for? Even for me, it is not an easy question.
I believe this ambiguity directly leads to the decreased role of geographers in Korea. Even though there are many adjacent disciplines like urban planning, meteorology, geology, their role is not as vague as geographers. It can be called as the tragedy of geography. Geography deals with almost everything in the world, but none of them is so specialized.
This essay is one of the attempts to illuminate the identity of geography in Korea. While I have studies geography for a long time, no clear answer was obtained. For me, it is still difficult to find its own role in geography. I believe the lack of investigation on this question is closely related to the decreased role of geography in Korea. I am not sure if the concentration of identity would contribute to animate geography. However, I am trying to write something on the experiences and thoughts while studying geography in Korea.
I am not sure of how much these essays can improve the circumstance in which Korean young geographers face. However, this work would be helpful for understanding why geographers are not having their own role in the Korean society.
To be continued.
